Jonathan Alan Lewis, a retired orthopedic and hand surgeon died February 3rd, 2020, at the Methodist Charlton Medical Center in Dallas, TX, where he was being treated for influenza. His death marked the end of an 11 year battle with Parkinson’s Disease.
Jonathan is survived by his wife of 36 years, Lynn Lewis (Persch); his children, Patricia Gorton (Don Gorton), Jeffrey Lewis (Robin Lewis), Jonathan “J.J.” Lewis (Tegan Lewis), Amy Francis (David Francis), Christin Lewis, and Jason Lewis (Linda Lewis); his siblings Gordon Lewis, Janet Manchee, and Carol Rider, his grandchildren: James Gorton, Annika Lewis, Jacob Lewis, Joshua Lewis, Isaak Lewis, Sean Francis, Mykah Lewis, Allison Francis, Jonnah Lewis, Maxwell Benedetti, Samuel Benedetti, Bailey Lewis, Daphne Lewis, and Paxton Lewis, and his great grand-child Leo Gorton. He is survived by his former spouses Kendra Morse (mother of Jeffry and Jonathan “J.J.”) and Carolyn Romano (mother of Amy and Christin). He was preceded in death by his brother James Lewis.
Jonathan was born April 9th, 1941, in Youngstown Ohio, to George Gordon Lewis and Mary Virginia Lewis (Crooks). He was the second of five children. He excelled in school and sports, namely basketball. He completed undergraduate studies at Johns Hopkins University where he also played basketball. He completed his medical degree at George Washington University. He spent two years in service with the Air Force after completion of his studies. Afterwards, Jonathan went on to become an accomplished orthopedic surgeon before deciding to specialize in hand surgery in 1994. He retired from surgery in 2000.
Jonathan had previously been an avid enthusiast of dirt bikes, corvettes, and basketball. He pursued his interests with great enthusiasm. He encouraged his children to do the same. He also encouraged all of his children to pursue education and to succeed.
Although he will be greatly missed, Jonathan’s family is comforted by his strong faith. He would regularly say, “I am not scared of death because my name is written in the Lamb’s book of life.” In his struggles with declining physical functioning, he would often talk about his excitement about heaven where he would be free from the limitations imposed by his body.
