Just as a ship sails over the horizon, so ends the long good-bye of John Wilson, who passed away on February 11, 2017. Husband of Betty, Father of John & Brad, Father-in-law to Amy and Channing, Pop to Peyton & Landon.
“Love knows not its own depth until the hour of parting”….. The Prophet.
Determined and dignified in life as well as in the daily struggles against Frontotemporal Dementia, a peaceful ending released him into a new and perfect calm. Born in Greenwood, MS in 1940 to Abe & Sadie Wilson they soon settled in Winona, MS. John’s brothers Judge Larry Wilson & wife Cynthia of Pascagoula and Alan Wilson, Merigold MS survive him. In high school John was a tenacious debater, an Eagle Scout, and formidable tennis player.
Drummer in the school band and participation in sports competed with academics, but scholarship always won.
Educated at Mississippi State University, graduated with a B. S. degree in Math, John was a member of Omicron Delta Kappa honorary leadership fraternity, listed in “Who’s Who in American Colleges And Universities”, and member of Kappa Sigma social fraternity.
Hired by IBM in 1962, John held many positions during his 30 years. Upon retirement in 1992 he joined Amtech Corp (mfg of toll tags) as President and CEO. During his years with IBM his favorite job was Branch Manager Data Processing Division, Charlotte NC from 1976-79. In those years at IBM, he and Betty enjoyed the famous Golden Circles, building and remaining close to many friends from those days.
A man passionate about his family, he took pride and pleasure in them as the greatest contribution of his life. He enjoyed memorable vacations with Betty, golf with his sons and special trips with his granddaughters.
John spent the best of his retirement around the golf course at Bent Tree Country Club. And to the Bent Tree staff who “had his back” as illness crept in, our family is forever indebted. Throughout this long journey we are grateful to the caregivers at Edgemere and faithful friends who stood by our family.
