John Sutherlin, age 81, died on Saturday, May 12, 2018, in Dallas, Texas. Since 2005, John has endured numerous treatments for cancer. John Sutherlin was born November 7, 1936, in Mishawaka, Indiana, the son of Berniece Bedford and William Vere Sutherlin. The family moved to California in 1946. John attended San Mateo High and University of California at Berkeley on a track scholarship, which he lost after breaking an ankle. While at UCB, he joined Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity.
In 1959, John joined the American Contract Bridge League (ACBL). After meeting at a bridge tournament, he married Peggy Berry in 1967. John proudly won many North American national tournaments and the First World Seniors International Cup in 2000, held in Maastricht, The Netherlands. In 2008, he and Peggy were made honorary members of the ACBL.
John was Vice President of Crocker Investment Management Corporation, which merged with Wells Fargo and served six years in the U.S. Air Force Reserve.
Survivors include his wife, Peggy; sister-in-law, Patricia and Charles Shrader of Newport Beach; nieces and nephews - Sean Finney (Anne Zimmerman, Vera, Leon) of San Francisco; Greg Finney of Portland; Kathryn (John, Emily, Sarah, Caroline) Carvelli of Newport Beach; Suzanne (Chris and Isabella) Thomas of California; David Schrader and Allan Gentempo of Long Beach; extended family – Rhynn and Bill McMinn of Pittsburg, TX; special cousin, Deby, Jeff, Matt and Zach Sweren of Keller. His sister, Ruth Finney Hayward, predeceased him.
The family wishes to express their appreciation to Dr. Kristi McIntyre, Kay Smith, RN, Nancy Pfeeger, RN and the staff at Texas Oncology.
Funeral service will be held on Saturday, May 19, 2018, 3 pm, at Sparkman/Hillcrest Funeral Home, 7405 W. Northwest Hwy., Dallas, 75225. Interment will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Pittsburg, Texas at a later date.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made in John’s name to an animal rescue charity of your choice.
