John Luke Hughston, 26, of Dallas, Texas, passed away in the early morning hours on May 2, 2021, at one of his favorite places in Palo Pinto, Texas. He was with dear friends and the love of his life, doing what he loved.
John Luke was born in Dallas, Texas, to Erin and Tom Hughston on May 16, 1994. He attended Christ the King Catholic School from K-8th and then went on to Jesuit College Preparatory School of Dallas, where he graduated in 2012. This is where John Luke developed his servant mindset and where he learned the Ignatian philosophy “Men for Others”. He carried his values from High School onward, always lending a hand where needed and striving to better the lives of those around him.
He attended Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, Texas, where he joined his older siblings Ainsley and Thomas; it’s also where he met his best friend and the love of his life, Mary Ann Johnston. His freshman year at TCU he pledged Kappa Sigma, following the path of his beloved brother Thomas. The lasting friendships and memories he made at TCU had a significant impact on John Luke. He loved being a Horned Frog and looked forward to gamedays and his Kappa Sig tailgates. He graduated from TCU Neeley School of Business with a degree in Finance in May 2016. He was excited to have just begun his new job with Texas Capital Bank as a Credit Energy Underwriter, Banking Officer. In the last several years, he was actively contributing his time to Cristo Rey’s Dallas College Prep and their student work study program.
John Luke loved anything outdoors. He had a passion for hunting and fishing and took any opportunity to get out of the city and wear his camo or waders – whether it was fishing at Caspary’s in Rockport, alligator hunting with his “Uncle” Bob in East Texas, hog hunting at Willy’s in Tellico, or at Crow’s in Palo Pinto, where he and his buddies hunted and hung out often. His other passion was cooking, and it came so natural to him. It was instilled in him from his grandmother “Big Katie” and his mom. He loved a good family recipe and found great joy in cooking for his friends and family.
John Luke was truly a “Man for Others” in every aspect of his life. He was kind, compassionate, giving, thoughtful, smart and funny. He was willing at any given moment to drop anything and lend a helping hand (or his truck). John Luke was sentimental and kept a box of meaningful things from his lifetime. He was happiest surrounded by friends, family and whichever yellow lab was in our life at the time, most recently Seger, whom he adored – the feeling was mutual. He loved his siblings Ainsley, Thomas and Hanna and you could find the four of them together often. It is truly a special sibling bond that will last forever. John Luke lived his life to the fullest and was never one to back down from an invite. He lived and loved fiercely in all of his amazing 26 years of life. His legacy will live on in each of us that were blessed to know him.
John Luke is preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, John Luke and Mary Catherine (Katie) McConn, his paternal grandparents Tom Finley Hughston and Betty Ince Hughston.
John Luke is survived by his parents: Erin and Tom (Tommy) Hughston; his brother, Thomas Hardin Hughston; sisters Catherine Ainsley Hughston and Hanna Marie Hughston; and many beloved aunts, uncles, and cousins.
