John Louis Henry was born on February 6, 1937 from the union of Brooks and Robbie Lee Henry in Rayville, LA. John passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 18, 2018 after a courageous battle with cancer. He was preceded in death by five brothers (Edward Byrd, David Henry, Rev Thomas Henry, Shelby Ray Henry, and Benjamin Henry) and one sister (Effie Henry).
John L, as he was known, accepted Christ and was baptized at an early age. He later united with Eastgate Baptist Church in Dallas under the leadership of the late Pastor H.D. Reagan, now under Pastor Kennedy Young, Jr. He graduated from Richland Parish High School in Rayville.
Soon after graduating from high school he began a long and illustrious career as a professional truck driver, obtaining his CDL as a teenager. He worked for several trucking companies over 65 years including Yellow Ball, TOX, and later KEHE. During his tenure he won frequent driving awards hauling freight across the country over a million miles while never having a citation or accident.
John L married Louisa Houston on March 31, 1960 in Ouachita Parish, Louisiana, settling in Dallas soon after. This union produced one daughter, Jacqueline LaJohn Henry. Louisa preceded him in death in 1985.
John L was a giving man who had an affable personality. He was known to make people around him laugh, and he let anyone know just how he felt about something. Some of his favorite sayings were, “I heard you I did,” and “roger that.” John L liked to travel when he wasn’t driving. During his life he visited faraway places like Hawaii, Alaska, and the Caribbean Islands. He was a dedicated worker and an ardent supporter of the church, various charities, and his family. John L loved following the local sports teams like the Rangers, Mavericks and Cowboys.
John leaves to cherish his memories, his daughter Jacqueline (Jack) of Sugar Land, TX; one brother Rev. Dr. Joseph L. Henry (Shirley) of Chicago, Ill; two sisters, Clarissa Henry and Ola Jean Arceneaux (Rogers) of Houston, TX; and a host of nephews, nieces, and cousins. He will be truly missed.
