Dick was born on December 24, 1935 to Sally and Encil Deen in Lexington, Kentucky. Following his graduation from Lafayette High School, Dick attended Georgetown College, where he met the love of his life, Mary Alice Lewis, on a blind date. He went on to graduate Magna cum laude with a double major in Chemistry and Biology. Dick attended the University of Louisville Medical School where he graduated with honors and was inducted into Alpha Omega Alpha, the honorary medical fraternity for graduates in the top 10 percent of their class. Upon graduation, Dick completed a rotating internship and anesthesia residency at Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas, Texas. Before starting his professional career, Dick served for two years as Chief of Anesthesiology at the United States Military Hospital in Fort Campbell, Kentucky. Following his military service, Dick returned to Dallas and joined R & R Anesthesia Associates. He practiced at St. Paul Hospital and was honored to serve a term as President of the Medical Staff. Dick was highly respected by his patients and medical staff.
Dick had a passion for music and was a gifted organist and classical pianist. He was able to help pay for his college tuition through his work as a church organist. He was knowledgeable in organ literature and history and was able to realize his dream to play the organ at the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris, France.
Dick was an active member and life deacon at Park Cities Baptist Church. He was a long- time teacher of High School Bible and taught Sunday school classes for young married couples and later for a senior men’s class. He served as substitute organist for over 25 years and served on numerous committees, including those involving upgrading the organ and installing carillon bells. Dick gave the gift of his time volunteering for Meals on Wheels and providing medical equipment to Cuba on several mission trips with East-West Ministries.
Dick loved his family, his supper club friends of fifty years, and had a special fondness for Corgis. Dick had such a wonderful sense of humor and will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Dick is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Mary Alice, his brother, Tom Deen (Betsy), his four children. John Richard Deen Jr, (Tracey), Paul Thomas Deen, Beth Dike, (David) and 10 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, sister Bettie Deen Stull, and son, Mark Lewis Deen.
A celebration of Dick’s life will be held at 11:00 AM, Saturday, July 22, 2023 in Ellis Chapel at Park Cities Baptist Church.
