Joanne Wilson of Lancaster, Texas, left this world for her eternal home in heaven on Wednesday, the 28th day of June 2023. She passed away at Dallas Methodist Hospital at age 74. Joanne was born in Ennis, Texas on the 20th day of August, to the parents of T.J. Upshaw and Etta Jean Upshaw.
Joanne accepted Christ early in Life and was a member at South Union Baptist Church for many years. She was devoted to singing in the choir. She later joined Morning Star Baptist church in Palestine, Texas, where she was a faithful member of singing in the choir as well.
Joanne attended school at Green Bay in Tucker, Texas and graduated from Westwood High School. She would later go to Trinity Valley Community College, where she obtained her Cosmetology License. Her passion was doing hair for her family and friends. She worked for Regis and JCPenney Salon in Palestine, Texas for many years. She later moved to Fairfield, Texas where she lived for 20 years. Before she moved to Lancaster, Texas she was a faithful member of Behind the Veil Church in Athens, Texas.
Joanne found out she had cancer on one of her kidneys which resulted in surgery and later her needing Dialysis. She started Dialysis in 2014 at the Fresenius Dialysis Center in Corsicana, Texas for Seven years. Joanne was serious about her health and never missed any treatment. She often found herself missing out on a lot of the family engagements as she knew this was a vital part of her life.! She decided to move to Lancaster, Texas in April of 2022, and started her Dialysis at the Fresenius Dialysis Center in Desoto, Texas. After her treatment, she loved getting Williams Chicken, a wing and a leg with a pepper!
Joanne spent her early life raising her 7 daughters and was always helping others. She always opened her doors and was always willing to help others. JoAnne loved talking and meeting people, she was very outspoken and would tell you just how she felt. She didn’t “Sugar-coat” anything. Her favorite saying was “Ya’ll better Recognize”. “She would tell us, I’m still the Mama!” She enjoyed singing, watching Judge Judy, Judge Toler and Judge Maybelline. She enjoyed listening to Gospel Music and most of all she loved the Lord. She raised her children in the church, and she kept them involved in many church activities.
She is preceded in death by her parents T.J. Upshaw and Etta Jean Upshaw, her grandparents, Sarah Johnson and Lee Huff Smith Sr., her oldest sister, LaVerne Bryant, and brothers, Larry Upshaw and J.C. Hagin, Jr.
She leaves to cherish, two sisters, Hilda Pinson and Gwen Black and two bothers Carlos Hagin and Roy Gardner. Her Longtime friend and companion: Cecelia Sweeney, Her daughters, Conda Jordan, Angela Dudley (William), Cynthia Smith (Terrance), Tammy Smith, Cheryl Dutton (Jamie), Kristi Harvey (Delvin), Dawana Smith (Brandon), Tomeka Johnson. Grandkids: Cleavell Jr., Rodrick, Jessica, Angelica, Jeffery Wayne Jr., Alicia, Anetra, Jaquala, William Jr., Breanna, Brittanie, Curtis Jr., Christopher, Christiana, Jaida, Mikey, Jesse, Joanna, Jordan, Marcus Jr., Chalacia, Aryanna, Delvin Jr., Makevian, Eryanna, Eric Jr., Angel and Jatavia. She also leaves to cherish a host of beloved cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
Great grand kids: MayGher, Justice, Marshawn, Zaniiya, Ariyanna, Ricky, Ayden, Serenity, Skyy, Ryleigh, Kieauri, Jeffery Wayne III, Kyrie, Ja’licia, Ka’nyla, Kyla, Alana Jo, Armani, Lilian, Sariyah, Ja’leiyah, Da’miya, I’yhanna.
