On Sunday evening, July 20, 2014 while the rest of the world was tucked in for the night, Joanne Ryan Johnson Fraedrich, 91, passed away peacefully leaving behind a legion of lives touched by her abundant love.
She and her twin, Jannette, were born December 12, 1922 in Chicago's Hyde Park, and were the middle children of the four daughters of Edward and Florence (James) Ryan. She was a graduate of Starrett School for Girls, attended Beloit College, and earned her RN from St. Luke's Hospital School of Nursing, Chicago in 1946.
Joanne married her childhood sweetheart, Donald Knight Johnson in June 1946, and they enjoyed 22 joyous years of marriage until his death from cancer in 1968.
In 1985, Joanne married her widowed brother-in-law, Doren Keith Fraedrich; he died a short time later in 1986.
Her calling as a nurse was her passion. Her first job was in a country hospital, and her career led her to hospitals and nursing homes in Spokane, Denver, and St. Louis. The family moved to Dallas in 1966, and she interviewed for a position at Southern Methodist University hospital & clinic, but Don's diagnosis and illness kept her home. Upon his death, the Director of Nursing at SMU called her and said, "We need you, and you need us." Thus, began her 26-year tenure at SMU, retiring as Assistant Director of Nursing.
She is survived by her children, Pamela J. Alonso and her son Bobby Alonso (Glenda); Eric R. Johnson (Ginger) of Arlington and their daughters Heather Levine (Benjamin) and Haley Duncan (Levi); Dane K. Johnson (fiance Jerri Graham); stepsons/nephews Edward R. Fraedrich (Eileen) of Alexandria, VA and their children, Megan, Daniel, and Lauren; Doren D. Fraedrich (Shelly) of Phoenix, AZ and his children, Peter (Rachel) and Michael (Dana) Fraedrich; Douglas S. Fraedrich (Laura) and their daughters, Catlin and Amy Fraedrich. She had 3 great-grand children Jacob and Ryan Levine; Delaney Duncan.
Memorial Services will be held at 1:00PM, Friday July 25th, at St. John's Episcopal Church, 848 Harter Rd., Dallas, TX 75218. The Rev. David Houk presiding. The family will receive friends following the service. Inurnment will be private. Memorials may be made to St. John's Episcopal Church.
