JoAnn Sowels King was born in Brandon, Texas Hill County, on November 22, 1942, to the late Genie and Cordie Lee Sowels. She was called to eternal rest on September 15, 2021 at the age of 78 while residing at Millbrook Healthcare & Rehabilitation Nursing Home in Lancaster, Texas.
JoAnn graduated from Wilmer Hutchinson H.S. in 1960, and later met and married the love of her life, Ladell Williams in 1962, he preceded her in death. To their union, four children were born, and they lived together in Joppa, Texas, before relocating to Dallas in 1972, when she began her career in aviation as an Aircraft Inspector for 32 years at Aviall Boeing and retired in 2005. She attended Cedar Valley College and studied Real Estate.
In 1978, she married Leo King and they owned L & J Trucking company. Their marriage dissolved after 37 years in 2015.
Sister King was a faithful member of Friendship-West Baptist Church under the spiritual leadership of Dr. Frederick D. Haynes, III, where she served as an Usher for many years and President of the Usher board. Sister King was a servant of the Hospitality Committee, Prayer Ministry, Bible Study, and she participated in community outreach programs. Her favorite charity was St. Jude Children’s Fund. She played softball for her employer, enjoyed gardening, and had an eye for antiques.
JoAnn leaves a legacy of integrity, love, and spiritual abundance. She is survived by her four children: Gil (Tina) Williams, of Glen Heights; Barbara and LaJuan Williams of Desoto; and Efrem (Mary) Williams, of Grand Prairie. She is also survived by seven grandchildren: Delaney, Lamar, Morgan, Jamar, Landon, Olivia, and Arron; and one great grandson, Matthew. Survived by two sisters, Ossie Dell Lankford; and Tommie (Archie) Mooreland; and one brother, Tenolan (Evelyn) Sowels. A host of relatives and friends. She was best known as ‘Dolo’ to her grandchildren and ‘JoJo’ to her closest friends. JoAnn was a buddy, a friend, and a mother to so many. She will be missed immensely.
