She was born in Blaine, Kentucky, on April 15, 1926, to the late Clarence and Carrie (Wheeler) Pennington. She married Ray Arthur Gooch and had two children. When widowed, she met and married Willis Schwarzwalder and celebrated 43 years of marriage. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Garland, where she enjoyed volunteer activities working in the Friendship House and the Shut-In Ministry along with Willis. Jewell also shared her warmth for others and love of sewing by providing lap quilts for shut-ins. She volunteered at Children’s Medical Center in Dallas and retired as a long-time employee of the Dallas County Tax Office.
Jewell was preceded in death by three sisters and her first husband.
Those left to cherish her memories include her husband, Willis Schwarzwalder; son, Clarence Gooch and wife Marie of Longwood, Florida; daughter, Laura and husband Deacon Larry Bate, Jr. of Carthage, Texas; grandsons: Captain Jonathan Bate and wife Captain Jill Bate of Ft. Campbell, Kentucky, Captain Stephen Bate and wife Kristin of Euless, Texas, and Larry Bate III and wife Laura of McKinney, Texas; and great granddaughter, Lauren Bate of McKinney.
Family members and her many friends will miss her gentle smile and sweet spirit. The family wishes to thank Seasons Hospice Care for their work.
Funeral services will be held at 10am on Wednesday, May 30, 2012, at First Baptist Church in Garland, Texas, with Rev. Jack Schmid and Dr. Greg Ammons officiating. Burial will follow in Grove Hill Memorial Park. Visitation will be held on Tuesday from 6pm to 8pm at Grove Hill Funeral Home. There will also be a brief viewing and visitation on Wednesday at the church beginning at 9am.
