Jerry Lee Holmes was born November 13, 1935, in San Antonio, Texas and departed this life on October 11, 2023. Jerry spent his early years in Arlington, Texas raised by James Gordon “Klepto” Holmes and Etta Pauline Hawks Holmes with his sister Helen Holmes Woodard. As the son of a college football coach and future college Athletic Director, the family moved to College Station, Texas where Jerry graduated from A&M Consolidated High School in 1954.
Jerry went on to attend Texas A&M University in College Station and graduated in 1959 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in History with a Minor in English. Jerry then attended the American Graduate School of International Management (Thunderbird) in Phoenix, Arizona finishing in 1960 with a Master of International Management degree. Jerry later went on to earn another graduate degree at Southern Methodist University’s Southwestern Graduate School of Banking.
Jerry began a banking career at Republic National Bank in 1960, ultimately ascending to Vice President and Manager of International Banking Services in 1968.
In 1965 Jerry married Nancy Ellen Ledbetter Kindle Holmes at St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church in Dallas, Texas. Jerry and Nancy have been dedicated members of St. Michael and All Angels ever since.
In 1972, Jerry resigned his position at Republic National Bank to manage the Ledbetter private family foundation and to begin a life of civic service supporting Jerry and Nancy’s cultural passions including Opera, Ballet, Theater, and Education. This included time as a Director and as President of the Dallas Civic Opera, time as a Director and as President of the Dallas Civic Ballet, and as a Director of the Dallas Theater Center. Both Jerry and Nancy were proud to receive a bronze plaque for Outstanding and Devoted Efforts for the Dallas Academy, where Jerry served as a Trustee and as President of the Board.
Jerry was also recognized in 1981 for his efforts in raising the private sector funds for the restoration of the Majestic Theater in downtown Dallas.
Jerry always maintained his Aggie roots as a lifelong Member of the Association of Former Students and was a proud Founder of the President’s Endowed Scholars Program at Texas A&M University.
In Jerry’s free time, it was not uncommon to see “the horseman” riding his horse around White Rock Lake or “the motorcycle jock” speeding down the country highways.
