Jerry Joe Asberry was born to the late Efford Love and Velma Marie Asberry on March 25, 1952 in Elkhart, TX. He attended Slocum Independent School District while living with his grand-parents Rube and Lorrine Asberry during his elementary years. He came to Dallas in his junior high years where he completed his education graduating from Thomas Jefferson High School in 1970. Jerry went to work for Caruth Rehabilitation immediately after high school after visiting an uncle there; he worked while also attending Mountain View College. While working at Caruth he met Prince Morrow and they became brothers and best friends for life. Jerry loved patient care and helping others.
Jerry accepted Christ at a very early age and united with Grace Chapel Church of God In Christ where his parents also attended. He sang in the junior choir under the direction of Sister Carrie Lou Davis. He loved singing and hanging out with Grace Chapel youth. He was also a member of The Black Gospel Movement under Cedric Dunford for many years.
He was one of the founding members of The Voices of Inspiration Gospel Choir founded by his cousin, Grady Banks, Jr. in 1980. While in The Voices he served as treasurer and a member of the mighty tenor section. Jerry was so very protective of The Voices, especially the younger members. He would always remind them that he was “daddy” until they got back to their parents. He ruled with a stiff hand and was loved all the more for it.
Jerry was employed by Pryor Rebuilders before enlisting in the U.S. Army where he served for six years before being honorably discharged as a sergeant. Upon his return from the army, Jerry went to work for Jack Eckerd Drug Corp.; later joining CVS Pharmacy transportation team after Eckerd was bought out by J.C. Penny. He ended his driving career at Ryder Logistics due to renal failure in 2005. He loved his family and worked hard to make sure their needs were always met.
Jerry was a member of The Christ Holy Temple Church of God in Christ under Pastor R.L. Nichols, Sr., where he served as a loyal and faithful member of the deacon board. God would later speak to him to return to Grace Cathedral in 2002, where he became an ordained elder in 2006, under the late Bishop T.W. Johnson. Jerry then later became a member of Pathway of Life Church under Pastor Danny and Sis. Norma Wegman in 2009. While at Pathway, Jerry was member of ACTZ Street Ministry and the POLC Choir. He loved both ministries and eagerly participated in as many functions as he could, when he could, but his greatest love was for ACTZ because he enjoyed feeding and ministering to the many homeless residents of Dallas. He was a true servant of God! If you were sick, he would pray for you; if you were lonely, he would visit you; if you were grieving, he’d be there to comfort you.
Jerry married the love of his life, Pamela Taylor on August 12, 1972 and to this union three children were born (Rodrick, Wylaia and Jerritta). He also fathered one son prior to his marriage (DeWayne). Jerry loved not just his own children, but he also loved his God-children Dawn, Toshua, Kim, Darryl, Pam, Letchrie, Alex, Taalor, John, Xavier and Shaunte.
Elder Asberry was preceded in death by his parents, grand-parents, one son, two sisters and one brother.
