Jeff was born in Dallas on October 2, 1949, to Juanita Trantham Newman and John Wesley Newman. [He graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School and continued to receive a BA at UT Austin and Juris Doctor from SMU. Jeff was married to the love of his life, Winifred Ellen Molis Newman for 46 years until her death in 2022
Jeff and Winnie owned a small town newspaper called the White Oak Independent in East Texas for 20 years until Jeff made a mid-life change and attended SMU law school in the late 90’s. He then joined Law Prose, Inc. where he worked for 20 years for as a lead editor and contributor to legal reference books. He was an avid reader and consumer of newspapers and NPR. He enjoyed crossword puzzles, listening to live music, beer gardens, and dreaming of the days in his youth when he rode his motorcycle cross country to work on political campaigns. He believed fiercely in equality and social justice. He had a quietly wicked sense of humor, able to deploy sarcasm and silliness both.
Jeffrey is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Winifred.
Jeff is survived by Julia Newman and Elkin Pautt of Dallas, their children Rio and Knox, Jordan Wesley and Anna Newman of Plano, his sister Juanita Gearing of Maryland, and other family and friends.
The family will be holding a private celebration of life to hold space for Jeff, share memories, and play music from his extensive record collection.
Cards and gifts may be sent to 9342 Springwater Drive, Dallas, TX 75228.
