Janet Elaine Sims made her entrance on December 20th 1943 at Hamot Hospital in her hometown birthplace Erie, Pennsylvania to her parents Howard and Mildred Horton. She was the oldest child of her 10 siblings. Janet attended Longfellow Elementary, Gridley Jr. High and Strong Vincent High School. She was an active and popular teen and became a cheerleader for the Strong Vincent Colonels. Janet, who was also called by her nick name Midge had a peaceful and calm nature; she was an avid lover of music frequently buying what was then known as 45 records. Almost every week she was spending her allowance on whatever was new on the hit parade while keeping up with the latest dances. Janet had a beautiful voice and on Sundays, she sang in the youth choir at First Good Samaritan A.M.E. Zion Church. After her high school graduation, she attended Wichita State University in Wichita, KS.
She lived and worked in Cleveland, OH residing with her aunt for a couple years. She returned to Erie and worked alongside her mother and many of the fine African American women of the Erie community at Erie Technological Products. Janet was a member of the Poisettes and the P’s & G’s bowling leagues. She was a bowler with impressive skill.
Janet relocated to Dallas, TX in 1985 to join her sister Marsha who had recently moved there. She became an employee of Simmons Airlines in 1987at DFW Airport. She worked as a Passenger Service Agent most of her career at DFW. In 2000 she was promoted to the position of Lead Agent. She retired from American Eagle in 2008.
She was preceded in death by her mother and father and her sister Phyllis Glover in Los Angeles, CA who just passed in November 2020. She is survived by and cherished in memory by her three children; two daughters, Rochelle Horton, & Sharon Sims; Dallas, TX; and one son, Sean Horton (Tina) Los Angeles, CA. Her grandchildren are Marcus Horton, Brandy Horton, Amber Harper (Eric), Jordan Horton, Isaiah Horton, Chaquoia Sims, Phillip Curlett, Jeremy Johnson and Ryan Horton. Janet is also cherished by her surviving siblings in Erie, PA; Cheryl Horton-Jong, Denise Horton, Raheem Horton, Gary Horton, Valerie Young (William), Andre Horton (Angella), Glenn Horton, Los Angeles, CA; Marsha Moore (Steve), Dallas, TX; Darrell Horton (Antoinette), Mebane, NC. She will also be lovingly remembered by her 20 great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews as well as many relatives and friends.
Janet was a member of Inspiring Body of Christ Church (IBOC) in Dallas, TX where the pastor is Rev. Rickie G. Rush.
Janet’s homegoing service is Saturday, June 12th 10:00 AM at IBOC church. The church is located at 7701 S. Westmoreland Rd., Dallas TX.
