A native Dallasite, Janet was most proud of her academic career which began at Hillcrest High School where she was Valedictorian and a National Merit Scholar. She later gained three degrees at the University of Texas at Dallas, culminating in a PhD Doctorate in Political Economy.
Janet worked at the Community Council of Greater Dallas interspersed between her university degrees. While at UTD, she worked as both a Teaching Assistant and Research Assistant. Following graduation she moved to Slidell, LA, and worked as a Research Fellow at Tulane University Medical Center.
In 1998, Janet moved to Washington, D.C. to take a job as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Environmental Protection Agency. She made the EPA her career, becoming an Environmental Scientist on the staff of the Global Change Research Program. While at the EPA, she received numerous awards and medals. One of her papers was recognized as one of Discover Magazine's Top 100 Science Stories of 2008.
Janet loved hiking in the mountains of Colorado and traveled frequently with family to the YMCA of the Rockies. She played on the tennis team in high school. As a youth and young teenager, she swam competitively on the Junior Mustangs and was privileged to have Richard Quick as the coach. Most of all, Janet loved her two Airedale dogs, Folly and Tyler.
Janet is survived by her brother David Gamble, his wife Donna and their son Brian Gamble (Kelli) and daughter Kelly Mills (Robbie), and her children Elise and Ruth, and her brother Mark Gamble and his partner Carol Perras.
While in Dallas, Janet was a member of Northpark Presbyterian Church and frequently sang in the choir. Her church home for many years has been St. Matthew's United Methodist Church in Annandale, Virginia, where she has many good friends who have been extremely supportive of Janet in various ways for many years. A nucleus of friends at EPA has equally supported her, with both groups and great neighbors giving her special attention in her final months.
A memorial service will be held for Janet on Friday, July 14, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel at Sparkman/Hillcrest Funeral Home, 7405 W. Northwest Hwy, Dallas, TX.
