James N. Muns, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and leader, passed away peacefully on March 6, 2025 at the age of 93. Born in Sweetwater, Texas, James led a remarkable life full of passion, dedication, and service to both his family and his community.
A graduate of Sweetwater High School, James went on to attend Abilene Christian University, where he earned a B.S. degree in Business Administration with minors in Psychology and Christian Education. At ACU, he was a proud member of the undefeated 1950 Wildcat Football team, whose perfect 11-0 season remains a cherished part of the university's history. Known not only for their football prowess but also for their love of music, the Wildcats would sing together at every opportunity, creating bonds that lasted a lifetime. Their victory over Adolphus in the Refrigerator Bowl in 1950, played during a rainstorm in Evanston, Indiana, remains a defining moment in his life.
In 1953, James began his professional career with Wyatt Food Stores, quickly rising through the ranks. He managed supermarkets in Fort Worth, became Personnel Director, and eventually became Vice President of Operations. His leadership played a crucial role in the company's growth, culminating in his tenure as President from 1978 to 1988. Under his guidance, Wyatt Food Stores expanded to 122 locations across nine states. In 1988, he sold the company and transitioned into a new venture as Owner and CEO of Muns Enterprises, L.P., a venture capital and investment firm specializing in real estate and related projects.
James’s impact, however, extended far beyond the boardroom. He devoted much of his life to public service, making Plano, Texas, a better place for all its residents. Serving on the City Council from 1981 to 1987, he was elected Mayor of Plano in 1992, where he served until 1996. During his time as mayor, he was instrumental in enhancing the quality of life in the city and was a key leader in Plano earning the prestigious title of one of the "All-American Cities" awarded by President Bill Clinton in a Rose Garden ceremony. He also served as a Director of the North Texas Commission, as a board member for Presbyterian Hospital Foundation, and as Chairman of the Board of Trustees for Presbyterian Hospital Plano. James was deeply committed to the community, earning recognition as Plano’s Citizen of the Year in 1995.
Faith played an essential role in James’s life. At a young age, he was invited to preach a sermon at a small church in Maryneal, Texas, where he led the congregation in prayer and song. His spiritual journey remained at the heart of his character. He was an active church elder at Walnut Hill Church of Christ in Dallas and Pitman Creek Church of Christ in Plano. His love for service and people was evident in everything he did.
James was a man of many passions. He enjoyed golfing, snow skiing, traveling, and exploring the arts, particularly music and woodworking. As a skilled woodworker, James found immense joy in crafting unique, handcrafted furniture for his family and friends, pouring love and care into each piece. His creations are treasured heirlooms, each one a reflection of his craftsmanship and deep affection for those he held dear. His creativity and love for life were contagious, inspiring those around him to appreciate the beauty in both the simple and the grand moments.
Above all, James was devoted to his family. He shared a deep and enduring love with his wife, Betty Bell Muns, and together they raised four children: Kathy, Marla, Greg, and John. Their families were the source of his greatest joy. James was a proud father, grandfather, and great grandfather, and his legacy will live on through the many lives he touched.
James is preceded in death by his beloved wife Betty Bell Muns, his parents, Elvie and Claude Muns, his grandchild, Jordan Katharine Muns, and his great-grandchild, Isabella Victoria dos Santos Muns. James leaves behind a lasting impact on everyone who knew him, whether as a visionary leader, a devoted husband, a loving father, or a cherished friend.
