James (Jim) H. Davis passed away on Friday, April 7th at his home in Dallas after a lengthy battle with diabetes. Jim was the son of George G. and Freda (Hargrave) Davis. Jim grew up in Dallas and then attended college in Idaho. After working a short time in Ohio, he returned to Dallas and remained here until his death.
Jim was an amazing man who had an overwhelming desire to help others. For many years Jim had a successful floral business in the Lakewood area, but Jim’s heart always searched for a way to do more. In 1990, Jim founded DOT ( Disciples of Trinity) a charity designed to assist terminally ill children and adults by helping them “live” and “die” with dignity. In keeping with this mission, Dot provided a food pantry, clothing bank, and assisted with housing arrangements, medical assistance and more. Dot’s resale shop at 5810 Live Oak St. was a stable in the community for 27 years and assisted in funding Dot’s many charitable out-reach endeavors.
Jim’s smiling face and caring interaction with many clients and customers kept people coming back just to be near his spirit of caring and love. DOT also held an Annual Gala that became a yearly social event in Dallas. Each gala was highlighted with entertainers. Among these performers were Dionne Warwick, Shirley Jones, Chi Chi Rivera, Tom Wopat, Lee Greenwood and Sandy Duncan.
An active member of the community Jim served on various boards and was integral in putting together the “Star Walk” located in the plaza area across from the historic Lakewood Theater. Jim earned numerous awards and recognitions not only in the Dallas area, but also from State & National officials. A few of these awards include: The J. C. Penney “Golden Rule Award”, Dallas Theater Center’s “Our Town Hero” award, Outstanding Leadership Award, Freedoms Foundation At Valley Forge Certificate Award, 2006 Ebby Rose of Distinction Honorees, and Certificate of Merit from the Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge.
Jim is survived by his brother, Michael G. Davis, and wife Diane; Sister, Georgia Ann Davis and Carmen Ray. Three nieces, Kristen Nelson Bohn, Rebecca Ruth Pugh, and Sarah Elizabeth Nichols. Also, eight grand nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at Sparkman Hillcrest located at 7405 W. Northwest Hwy in Dallas, TX. Visitation will be held Tuesday evening April 11 from 6:00 – 8:00 P. M. The funeral service will be held Wednesday April 12 at 10:00 A. M.
