Irma was born into a family rich in love on November 7, 1934, in Laredo, Texas. When Irma was ten years old, her parents, Marcelo and Felipa Guerra moved their family of eight to Dallas, Texas, where she would remain and embark on a life filled with accomplishments.
In 1953 Irma graduated from North Dallas High School and married soon after. Although the marriage was short-lived, God blessed her with her first son. Being a mother was one of her proudest achievements; she would have three more children with her husband of 58 years, Jose "Joe" Lopez. Joe was indeed the love of her life; their marriage was the foundation of a strong, close-knit family even generations later.
Irma achieved success in all aspects of her life. Not only was she a cherished wife, mother, and beloved family member, she was a dedicated and diligent person who approached every challenge with a determined resolve. In her fifties, after raising a thriving family, Irma enrolled in college. She graduated at age 61 from Dallas Baptist University with a degree in teaching. She swelled with pride from that day on; it was one of her greatest feats.
Irma was a thoughtful and generous person who enjoyed giving to others. She often surprised friends and family with unexpected gifts, but her most appreciated gift was her cooking. She was a skillful chef, adept at countless dishes, but traditional Mexican cuisine was her specialty. Love oozed from every enchilada and nobody on the planet made better tortillas or tamales.
She is preceded in death by both parents, brothers Toby, Delfino, Marcelo, Jr., and husband, Joe. She is survived by her sister, Lou Dean: brother, Arthur Guerra; children, John David, Adrianne, Joe, Manuel and Irma; grandchildren, Kelly, Brian, Amy, Riqui, Noelle, Stephen, Charles Ray, Joseph, and Daniel, as well as many great-grandchildren and even great-great-grandchildren.
