Irma Jean Briggs was born on October 6, 1930 in Natchez, MS to the union of James and Rose Mary Patterson (both deceased). She graduated from Broomfield High School in Natchez, MS. Jean was affectionately called “Baysis” and “Grandma”.
Jean was a longtime member of Mt. Moriah Baptist Church in New Orleans, LA and a member of the adult choir. She committed her life to Christ at an early age. Jean’s life was a living testament of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. She was known for speaking her mind, being resilient, quiet, kind and a no fuss woman of God who loved her family.
She was a loving and protective mother to Susan M. Brass and Deborah F. Briggs (deceased). Jean raised her granddaughters, Patricia A. Obey and Natasha L. Shields. She directly participated in the lives of all her grandchildren including Jahara A. Brown and Jonquil N. Alexander. Jean provided love and guidance to great-grandchildren, Ashley Shields, Christian Walker Jr., Ashton Shields, Ashean Shields, Lizette Brown, Javon Brown, Gabrielle Cobb, Jaala Martin, Darius Alexander Jr., Malaya Brown and Jeremiah Alexander.
She doted on her five great-great grandchildren.
Jean was preceded in death by her siblings, Esther Anderson, Louise Sanders, Verena Kennedy, Alberta Logan, Charlotte “Ruth” Johnson, Lee Patterson and James Patterson Jr. She was loved and adored by so many people. And her family are comforted in knowing that God has said, “Well done my good and faithful servant”.
