Inez Hunter Amirkhan passed away peacefully surrounded by family on June 2, 2019. Inez was born in Atlanta, Georgia, on July 28, 1927, the daughter of Fred and Inez Orme Hunter. She wasn’t born in Texas, but she got here as quick as she could, arriving in 1931 when her father was transferred to the Sears Mail Order on Lamar. Growing up in Oak Cliff, she graduated from Sunset High School in 1944. Inez received her B.B.A. from SMU, met Mirza Amirkhan on a blind date and married six months later in 1950. They were married for 62 years and had two children. She was a wonderful wife and an exceptional mother.
In 1976, after her children were grown, she entered the family business, Oriental Rug Cleaning Co. on Ross Avenue in Dallas, where she was known for her unapologetic rule following. She retired in 2010 to care for her husband. She always said she wasn’t born an Armenian, but she had been married to one for so long that she thought of herself as one! Married to an Armenian and still “tharp as a shack!”
Dedicated in November 2015, Inez was the primary donor for the Memorial Pavilion at Frost Cemetery, the small, central Texas town where her mother grew up. The pavilion was named in honor of her mother, Ellen Inez Orme Hunter. Inez enjoyed travelling the world and trying out the newest restaurants with friends and family, reading non-fiction books about historical figures and watching classic Hollywood movies on TCM. She was kind, generous, honest, loving and made us laugh to her last days. She will be missed dearly.
Inez is pre-deceased by her husband, Mirza, her brother, Philip Hunter and sister-in-law, Dr. Mary K. Outlaw. Inez is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Drs. Nelson and Robin Amirkhan; daughter, Ellen Amirkhan; nieces and nephews, Kathy Neilson, Janice Mitchell (Mike), Dr. Scott Hunter (Claire), Bruce Hunter and sister-in-law, Maxine Hunter. The Amirkhan family would like to thank the staff of Crystal Creek at Preston Hollow and Vitas Hospice for their exceptional care these past years . We also want to give special recognition to the staff of Oriental Rug Cleaning Co. and Jennifer Malani for treating our mother as if she were their own.
