He was born on March 24, 1922, and was preceded in death by his parents, James and Irine Greer; and siblings, Leroy Greer and Lillian Greer McCauley. He is survived by his wife, Helen Greer; 4 children, Vicki Greer Slate, Suzanne Greer Duett and husband Larry, Carolyn Carbajal, and Gary Horton; nephew, Mackie McCauley; ten grandchildren: grandsons, Scott Mitchell and wife Rosa, Todd Mitchell and wife Tracy, Mark Morrison and wife Angie, James Morrison, Stephen Carbajal, Don Horton, Eric Horton and wife Randi; granddaughters, Christy Pearson and husband Mark, Shay Rollins, and Stephanie Kubes; 14 great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great-grandchildren.
After serving in the U.S. Air Force for 28 years, 7 months, and 10 days, he retired and moved back to Texas. Years later he was introduced to the “love of his life,” and they relocated to Mancos, Colorado where he raised mules. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and riding in the high country. He loved spending time in the mountains with his family and friends, telling stories from the past, and sharing memories (“Hot dog!”). Horace lived an adventurous life, doing things he loved. He once said, “The best part of his life was being married to Helen.” The love and compassion he showed her was proof enough. In his final days, he said he had lived a good life, and in true Horace fashion he said, “I will be waiting for you.”
Funeral Services and Military Funeral Honors will be Saturday, May 16 at 10:00 A.M. at Grove Hill Funeral Home, 3920 Samuell Blvd, Dallas, TX 75228. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Horace’s honor to the Wounded Warrior Project at www.woundedwarriorproject.org/Donate.
