Helen Ruth was born on July 10, 1932, in Kemp, Texas to Jake and Lizzy Williams. Helen was the middle child of her mother’s three children. Her Mom passed away when Helen was nine years old. Due to hard times imposed on her family, the highest level of formal education that she was allowed to complete was third grade. Later in life, Helen attended cosmetology school.
Helen accepted Christ at an early age and professed that her religion is “Holiness.” Helen knew who GOD was and was a firm believer in his word. She prayed without ceasing.
During her lifetime, Helen shared stories of how she had to pick cotton as a child and was not afforded an education that a lot of people take for granted today. She also worked as a pie maker for Wyatt’s cafeteria, a domestic worker, school cafeteria worker for Los Angeles Unified School District, and later became an entrepreneur offering babysitting services to family and friends.
Helen moved to Southern California in the early 1960’s to seek a better life for herself and her children. She remained there until retirement in 1992, then moved back to her home state of Texas where she remained until her passing.
Helen Ruth, also known as “Baby Ruth,” was the matriarch of her family. She was the glue that held her family together. She had many hobbies, crafting, baking, cooking, and gardening. But her most favorite thing of all was watching WWE wrestling.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents, Jake and Lizzy, younger sister Katie Mae, older brother Ernest Williams, older sister Viola, and five of her seven children: Henry, Jeanette, Theresa, Ruth Ann, and Vernon. Baby Ruth departed this life and went to be with her loved ones on August 26, 2023.
Those left to cherish her memories are her remaining two children: Loving daughter and care giver Regina Walker, and Phyllis (Bruce), son-in-law: Reginald Clark, bonus daughter Elaine Walker, one brother: John Williams (Shauna), grandchildren: Artrese, Davion, Henry Jr., Eddie, Cornelius, Rashida (Wilfred), Germon, Steffyni, Jade, Tonyette, and Darrin Jr, great-grandchildren: Ariana, Demetrius, Isaiah, Mya, Dennis, Dylan, Germany, Aden, Davion Jr., Shanice, Cornelius, Kezia, Coriyan, Wany’a, and Patrick.
