Harry T. Bowen, Jr., born August 28, 1930, went to be with his Lord and previously departed family and friends on December 29, 2013. He was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Betty Charlene Bowen and his granddaughter Rachelle Smart. He is survived by five children, eight grandchildren and three great grandchildren as follows: Dianne Herring, husband Jim, Rodney Smart, wife Rhonda and child Rod Jr. and his wife Erin and son Carson, Harry Bowen III, wife Annette and children Luke and Kylie, Bobby Bowen Sr., wife Nancy and children Bobby Jr. and his wife Shea and son Adyn, Courtney, Toan and their son Paxton, and Brittney, Pamela Petrey, husband Jeff and children Abigail and Savannah. Harry was born and raised in west Texas. He joined the Air Force in 1950 and spent 4 years serving his country, 9 months of that in Korea. In 1961 he graduated with a BA degree in math and began a career with Employers Casualty Company. He served in the Actuarial Department, manager of a Methods and Procedures Department and ended his 32 years as Senior Vice President dealing with the day to day operations of the company. His passion, and consequently his time and effort, were three fold: the Lord, his family and children in general. He served at Lakeside Baptist Church as a Sunday School teacher/director, Deacon, member of various committees and much more. His family was a constant focus supported by prayer, encouragement, and literally helping in any way to meet a need. Meeting the needs of children was a true passion. Harry enjoyed teaching and directing Sunday School, mentoring in the elementary school, interviewing and helping kids and their families at White Rock Center of Hope and supporting programs for community kids at the church.
The family will receive friends on Friday, January 3, from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at the Sparkman Crane Funeral Home located at 10501 Garland Rd., Dallas. Services will be held on Saturday, January 4 at 10:00 a.m. at Lakeside Baptist Church, 9150 Garland Road, Dallas, with Dr. Jeff Donnell officiating. In lieu of flowers, contributions to the Lakeside Baptist Church Children’s Division or White Rock Center of Hope would be appreciated.
