Gordon Joseph Roy

Mr. Gordon Joseph Roy of Dallas, Texas, departed this life on May 22, 2023, at the age of 73. He was born September 17, 1949, in Bunkie, LA; the son of Huron Julius Roy and Mary Antoinette (Pettera) Roy.

He was a 1967 graduate of Marksville High School, attended Tulane University in New Orleans on a football scholarship and served in the Army National Guard. He married his high school sweetheart, Leslie Scallan in 1969. He was of Catholic faith and a member of Prince of Peace Catholic Church in Plano, Texas.

Growing up in Mansura, LA he was a high school athlete and was named “Athlete of the Year” in 1967 at Marksville High School. He excelled in four sports: football, baseball, basketball and track. He enjoyed golf, the outdoors and liked to duck hunt and fish as most do living in “Sportsman’s Paradise”.

Mr. Roy had a successful 34-year career in the Utility Industry that started in 1970 with CLECO, Central Louisiana Electric Company. He went on to develop his career when CLECO merged with Trans La Gas and then again with Energas in 1986. As they continued to grow their business Gordon supported their venture holding several different positions (District Manager I, II, Divisional VP) before being named President of Western Kentucky Gas in 1987. The company as it is known today became Atmos Energy Corporation in Sept 1988 and shortly after he made his final move to Atmos’ Corporate office in Dallas, Texas. He served as VP of Operations for Shared Services starting in 1989; VP Gas Supply & Marketing 1993; VP Gas Supply 1995; VP Security & Compliance in 2002. He retired from Atmos on November 30, 2004. He celebrated his retirement with a dream trip to Pebble Beach with his wife, sons & daughter in-laws along with three grandchildren. He always boasted that he was the luckiest guy to have three sons and his own golfing foursome. Gordon was a man of many words especially when it came to his sons but at this moment in time at Pebble Beach was the first time his family had ever seen him rendered speechless when his sons presented him with a special time piece to mark the end of his professional career.

Mr. Roy accomplished many things in his 73 years. Not only did he have a successful professional career but was married and raised three sons together with his wife of 53 years. Gordon took his retirement seriously filling his time with golf, hunting, mowing his grass and taking walks around the block with his grandkids. However, his focus on his family was by far his greatest love. He never strayed far from his Louisiana roots and enjoyed good food, drink, music and a game of Booray. He liked giving orders on how to “boil the crawfish”, “carve the pig”, or “grill the steaks” at the many large family gatherings through the years.

His pride and joy were his grandchildren. He made it a priority to attend as many of their events or activities as possible, sometimes that meant traveling long distances to enjoy a performance. It didn’t matter if it was t-ball, baseball, basketball, band, bowling, golf, soccer or dancing, he never missed an opportunity to tell them how proud he was of them or to encourage them to follow their dreams. He passed his love of hunting along to his grandson, his love of golf and dancing to granddaughters and took great pride in seeing the oldest grandchild become an adult making his own way. They will remember their King Papa for late night dance parties, bone-crusher handshakes, his contagious smile and words of wisdom.

Mr. Roy will be remembered fondly and missed by many, especially by his family that he loved so dearly.

Mr. Roy was preceded in death by his parents; father in-law, Herman Rock “Hip” Scallan; brother in-law, Steven Joseph Rabalais; nephew, Blake Keith Roy and special influence, Lethia Mayeux.

He is survived by his wife Leslie Scallan Roy of the home; and children, Kevin Roy (Lea) of Kennesaw, GA; Brandon Roy (Holly) of Dallas, TX; Nicholas Roy (Amber) of Frisco, TX; two sisters, Cynthia Daniel (William) of St. Francisville, LA; Rhonda Rabalais of Mansura, LA; one brother, Keith Roy (Dottie) of Mansura, LA; six grandchildren, Forrest, Abigail, Tyler, Preston, Avery and Weston Roy; mother in-law Patsy Scallan of Baton Rouge, LA; a large extended family and a lifetime of friends.

A visitation for Mr. Roy will be held Thursday, June 8, 2023 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Ted Dickey West Funeral Home, 7990 President George Bush, Turnpike, Dallas, TX 75252 with the rosary starting at 7:00 PM. A memorial mass will occur Friday, June 9, 2023, from 10:30 AM to 11:30 AM at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, 720 S. Floyd Rd., Richardson, TX 75080 followed by a reception in the St. Paul Catholic Church Parish Center, 900 St. Paul Dr., Richardson, TX 75080.
