Gloria Anne Thornton Slack, 84 of Dallas, TX, passed away peacefully in her home, Saturday, February 26, 2011. Gloria was born August 18, 1926 in Dallas, TX to George Watson Thornton & Mabel Irene Thornton. A Dallas girl through and through, she attended Woodrow Wilson High School and went on to graduate from Southern Methodist University with a Bachelors’ degree in Home Economics and Theatre. Gloria was a proud member of the Delta Delta Delta Sorority where she forged friendships that lasted a lifetime. She was known for her beautiful voice and was frequently asked to sing at weddings and other formal events. While attending SMU she met William B. Slack, Jr., whom she married on September 3, 1950. Gloria was a member of the United Methodist Women, Methodist Hospital Auxiliary, Wesley Rankin Center, and PEO. Gloria truly enjoyed spending time with her church family and friends. She was an active member of the Highland Park United Methodist Church. She loved being with her family as well as music, cooking, singing, and of course, smiling. Gloria is survived by her husband Rev. William B. Slack, Jr., daughter Georgia Slack Lyon and her husband Dan Lyon, son Dr. Charles Slack and his wife Elizabeth, sister-in-law Katie Frank Slack, and grandchildren Rachel, Will, Porter and Alex (to whom she was affectionately known as MoMo). Gloria’s family will be celebrating her life on March 12, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. in the sanctuary at Highland Park United Methodist Church, 3300 Mockingbird Lane, Dallas, TX 75205. The family requests that in lieu of flowers to please send a donation to a charity of your choice.
