Gerry Allen Sherman, age 78, passed away on July 27, 2021 in Richardson, Texas. He was born on July 8, 1943 in Columbus, Ohio to Jack Andrew Sherman and Rachel Ellen Ricketts. Gerry grew up in Columbus and the southeastern Ohio area. After graduating from Laurelville High School, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy where he served 11 years active duty and 17 years in the Navy Reserve. While in the Navy he really did get to see the world; he served on Destroyers and Submarines and retired at the rank of Senior Chief Petty Officer – Machinist’s Mate. Following his active duty tours and after a few years in the corporate world, he went back to school and received a Bachelor of Industrial Technology in Quality from the University of Idaho.
Gerry married Marion Petefish Bize in 1984. Although they had no children together, they were blessed to have a blended family of five children. They were also fortunate to have eight grandchildren.
He was a Quality Engineer and Consultant, and after several years working for various corporations he formed two companies, Quality Education Services and Makor Management. Through these companies he had the opportunity to teach thousands of people about quality management systems, as well as evaluate other companies’ management systems. He was very active in ASQ, a society for quality professionals where he held several leadership positions over the years. In addition, he authored several books on quality principles.
Gerry loved to travel, and in their 37 years together he and Marion took many cruises and trips. In what would turn out to be some of Gerry’s most memorable travel experiences, he worked with students from the Rouen Business School, a post-baccalaureate business school in Rouen, France for several years in the late 1990s – late 2000s. During this time, he had about a dozen French students from the school come and work in his companies as interns. This resulted in numerous trips to France and friendships formed with interns and their families that still exist today. Gerry used to joke that he had seen more of France than most French people.
Gerry is preceded in death by his parents Jack and Rachel, and brothers Chuck, Dan, Gary and Jack Sherman.
He is survived by his loving wife Marion, brothers Michael and Jimmy Sherman, children Gerald Sherman (Tiffany), Michelle Sherman-Pytel (Pete), Stephen Sherman, Jennifer Sherman and Nicolette Bize Wiley (Rick), and grandchildren Conner Sherman, Crystal Wiley, Victoria Sherman, Lindsay Pytel, Jordan Dennett, Daniel Sherman, Weston Pytel, and Hadyn Wiley. He also leaves behind numerous other loved ones.
His family and friends will always remember Gerry as a person of many interests who had great enthusiasm for living life. He was an accomplished home chef, food and wine aficionado, and travel enthusiast. Gerry will be deeply missed by many people.
A celebration of Gerry’s life will be held on Saturday, August 21, 2021 at Ted Dickey West Funeral Home, 8011 Frankford Road, Dallas, TX 75252.
