G. R. Howard was born November 20, 1919 to John Burkhalter and Savannah Ellen Morrow Howard in Palestine, Texas and left this earthly home on May 9, 2019 at the age of 99. Following graduation from Palestine High School, G.R. attended The University of New Mexico for one year before entering the United States Air Force in 1941. He was promoted to the rank of Second Lieutenant in the Air Force and then entered the Marine Corps in 1946 where he served until retirement in 1965 with the rank of Major. During his years as a Marine, G.R. was with the First Division on Guadalcanal and later with the Fifth Division until 1946. G.R. continued serving his country in the Marine Corps Reserves until July 1, 1965. He attended Southern Methodist University and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1948. Mr. Howard’s civilian career began when he joined Dun and Bradstreet, Inc. in 1948. He retired as an executive after 39 years. Following retirement, G.R. volunteered at the American Red Cross driving patients to hospitals and making deliveries for the Disaster Division. Continuing to retain his accounting skills, G.R. worked for H&R Block/Casa Linda office from 1988 until 2007. He enjoyed reading, watching and listening to sports, remaining current on IRS laws, pecan harvesting, and squirrel relocation. His friends and family will remember him as a patriot and philanthropist. G.R. is preceded in death by his parents; brother, J.B., Jr.; and sisters, Savilla Marie and Helen Juanita. He is survived by nephew, John Howard Haworth and friends. Remembrances may be made to the charity of your choice.
