He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Mary Ellen Kocian, brother William Horak, and nephew, Chuck Kocian.
Frank is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Patricia Devers Horak. He will be dearly missed by his children: Christy Genin (Dave), Julie Horak (Mark Wilzbacher), and son Frank Horak Jr. He was a proud grandfather to Lauren Haynes (Jacob), Matt, Nick, and Zack Genin, and great-grandchildren Ellie and Asher Haynes.
Frank was a man of many talents and interests. He attended Holy Trinity Catholic School and graduated from Jesuit High School (1959). He furthered his education at the University of North Texas receiving his Bachelor Degree in Psychology, University of Dallas MBA, and the University of Texas at Dallas.
Frank dedicated his career to Northrup Gruman, formerly Vought and LTV, where he served in Human Resource Skills, Radiologist Officer, and Safety Training Specialist from 1967-1999. He said he was blessed to have a great job with so many friends. He served as Past President of the LTV Management Association, the American Physics Society, and the American Society of Safety Engineers.
In his free time, Frank enjoyed various hobbies and activities. He was a talented photographer and Master Horologist (clockmaker). He was a longtime member of DACA previously serving as President and show manager at Market Hall where he made many friends who shared his passion of collecting, hunting, teaching, and visiting the YO Ranch. He was an avid hunter, a lifetime member of the N.R.A. serving as a Director of the Gun Collecting Committee, Texas Rifle Association, a board member and Range Officer of the Grand Prairie Gun Club, and Arlington Gun Club. He was a competitive marksman and received the Burkett Trophy of 7th in the World. He was a Boy Scout Leader, recipient of the Wood Badge and prestigious Silver Beaver award, he sponsored over six hundred Eagle Scouts, and volunteered over 5000 hours at the Boy Scout Museum. Some of his proudest moments were to see his son and three grandsons become Eagle Scouts. Frank was a Fourth-Degree member of the Knights of Columbus serving twice as Grand Knight. He loved running the kitchen at the Friday Night Fish Fry. He enjoyed cooking, especially grilling barbecue. He coached little league, also coaching and playing men’s softball. Frank and Pat (Patsy) enjoyed traveling to many parts of the world. Alaska being his favorite. He loved fishing, catching a 13-pound catfish on the Trinity River at age 12, and 187 pound Halibut in Alaska. After retirement, He volunteered with the Baptist Benevolence picking up and delivering food to the needy. Frank cherished his loyal companion, Zorro, his beloved dog.
Frank had a strong faith and was a member of St. Luke’s Catholic Church for over 50 years. He found solace and comfort in his religious community. He served as usher, helped with the parish festivals, and conducted the KC Blood Drive for 35 years at St. Luke.
Frank’s life will be celebrated at Calvary Hill on Monday, October 16th, with a visitation from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm with Rosary at 7:00 pm. A funeral mass will be celebrated by Father Dan Clayton on October 17th at 10:00 am at Calvary Hill North Chapel 3235 Lombardy Ln, Dallas, Texas. A reception will follow at the Knights of Columbus Hall at 2906 Rock Island Road in Irving.
Frank John Horak will be remembered for his love for his family, his dedication to his faith, his sense of humor, service to others, and his many passions and hobbies. He will be deeply missed by all who have had the pleasure of knowing him.
