Evelyn Ruth Hailey, 91, passed away peacefully on December 22, 2020. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold L. Hailey, in 2014. She is survived by her four children, Norma Bradley (Russell) of Bryan, TX, Richard Hailey (Luann) of Copper Canyon, TX, Nancy Scarbrough (David) of Waco, TX, and Janet Green (Robert) of Coppell, TX, along with 13 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.
Evelyn was born in Marshall, Texas before moving to Dallas as a youth. She graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School and attended Southern Methodist University where she met her husband, Harold. They married following his graduation from the University of Texas and then settled in Dallas to work and raise their family. They purchased a new home on Liptonshire in the newly developing Lake Highlands area where Evelyn was a devoted wife, homemaker, and mother. Three houses later, Harold’s job took him to Fort Worth where they settled in Arlington. Later moves took them to Kingwood, TX and then back to the Dallas area and their retirement home in Coppell, TX.
Evelyn was a proud fifth generation Texan. Her father was George C. Cole who was the great grandson of Dr. John Cole, one of the original settlers of Dallas and the town’s first doctor as well as the first probate judge of newly founded Dallas County. Present day Cole Avenue in Dallas, including Cole Park, passes through what was once the family homestead.
Evelyn was a loving and devoted mother. Her family was always her priority, and they were blessed by her reliable and unwavering presence in their lives. She was content with her home and family, and she leaves behind a happy and successful legacy. Evelyn was quiet, strong, and self-reliant, living independently until the last year of her life. She kept a wonderful sense of humor and always saw the good in people. She had a special place in her heart for those in need and was a prolific supporter of innumerable charitable organizations supporting military veterans, first responders, and animal rescue. She was an honest, genuine, generous, kind, and caring woman. She was deeply loved and will be greatly missed.
A private ceremony this week will be followed later in the year by a celebration of Evelyn’s life. She will be interred next to Harold in Dallas.
