Evelyn Lucille Fawcus, age 81, passed away on November 27, 2022 in Denton, Texas. She was born on January 28, 1941 in Corpus Christi, Texas to Howard and Hyacinth Duncan. She grew up in South Texas, graduating from Bishop High School. She earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education from Texas A&I University (Texas A&M-Kingsville). She married Kenneth Clay Fawcus, III, in 1964 and had two children, Jennifer Lynne and Kenneth James.
Evelyn was an educator most of her life. She began her career as a primary school teacher in Falfurrias, Texas, continuing in this field when her family moved to DFW. After staying at home to raise her children, she resumed her career in education as a preschool director at the Church of the Resurrection School in Dallas. After many years of working with preschoolers, Evelyn accepted a position as principal of the Dallas Can Academy, where she worked with teenagers who struggled in traditional schools.
Evelyn was very passionate about Jesus Christ and serving Him. She was involved in many ministries both within and outside of her church. She was the organist at several churches including the Episcopal Church of the Resurrection, Forney United Methodist and Southwood United Methodist in Dallas. She was the youth choir director at Church of the Resurrection and youth minister at St John’s Methodist in Dallas. She retired from church work after leading the choir at Grace Episcopal in Mesquite for many years. Evelyn was also actively involved in the Christian renewal ministries, Cursillo and Tres Dias. She shared her love of Jesus with other women on these weekend retreats.
Evelyn loved to sing and to make people laugh, sometimes combining these. She could randomly burst into song at the top of her lungs at any given time. She loved big hugs, crazy hats, and being silly. You never quite knew what to expect from her, but you knew that it would involve a giggle. Even though Alzheimer’s destroyed much of her, it never took these parts of her. She may not remember or even know you, but she would greet you with a big smile, a long hug, then a song that she created just for you.
Evelyn loved her family fiercely. Her greatest joy was spending time with them. She is preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth C. Fawcus, III and her sister, Mariella Karr. She is survived by her sister, Jimmie Duncan of Hawaii, and brother, David Duncan of Rockport, Texas; her daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer and Jeffrey Martin of Aubrey, Texas and their children, Ashley and Joshua; and her son and daughter-in-law, James and Myra Fawcus of Irving, Texas and children, Sarah, Christian, Stewart, and Nigel.
