Nora Estelle Jones Potts passed peacefully away on Tuesday, November 30, 2021. Estelle was born in Rutherford County, Tennessee, on February 17, 1922, to Houston Horton Jones and Nora Westbrooks Jones.
She was a faithful and devoted member of University Park United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women, serving as Archivist for UMW for many years, and a former member of St. Mark’s United Methodist Church in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. In addition, she was a member of the Jane Douglas Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Daughters of 1812, Colonial Dames and the Highland Park Book Club. History was a keen interest for her ,as was genealogy. She and her sister, Sarah Jones Goodwin, wrote the history of communities and families in several Middle Tennessee counties, which was published in 1984. Estelle enjoyed gardening, shared her culinary talents with several organizations as well as her family, and for many years engaged in one of her favorite pastimes, oil painting, particularly florals and landscapes. She loved music and could relish the Andrews Sisters’ “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy of Company B” as much as a Chopin nocturne or Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture.
Estelle was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Gordon E. Potts. She is survived by her daughter, Mira Potts Cranfill, her granddaughter, Jennifer Cranfill, and her son-in-law, John Cranfill, all of Dallas; her sister, Mary Frances Rankhorn, of Franklin, Tennessee; her sister-in-law, Jean Fox, of Crossville, Tennessee; her sister-in-law, Shirley Grobe, of Farmersville, Texas; her sister-in-law, Virginia Jones, of Shelbyville, Tennessee; and many beloved nieces and nephews in Tennessee and Texas.
A celebration of her life will be held in February of 2022, at University Park United Methodist Church. Memorials may be made to University Park United Methodist Church, Dallas, Texas, or to the Methodist Children’s Home, Waco, Texas.
Estelle will be deeply missed by her family and friends. She was a guiding light for us all. Her name means “star.” She was all that all the time for us.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.Sparkman-Hillcrest.com for the Potts family.
