Ernest Jones was called to be with the Lord on May 1, 2018. He passed peacefully in his home surrounded by family and friends. Ernest was born on January 21, 1923 in Dallas, TX. He was preceded in death by his parents James Daniel and Annie Jones and his brothers (Amel, Johnnie, Robert, J.B.) and sister Annie Mae . He was also preceded in death by his beloved wife Imogene to whom he was married for 68 years and is survived by his children Mark Jones, Sandra Kost, and Katrina Pugh (Rick). He is also survived by five grandchildren (Reagan, Alyssa, Jeff, Derek, and Allison) and five great grandchildren (Max, Macie, Mia, Kylan, and Bradyn) and brother and sister in-law Jack & Patsy Savage, close friends Diana & Jose Garcia as well as many nieces, nephews, friends, and his caregivers Bernice Ward and Sarah Taylor. After graduating from Crozier Tech High School in 1941 Ernest joined the U.S. Coast Guard in 1942 and served honorably during World War II on the USS Pettit as a Boatswain’s Mate Second Class until 1946. He moved back to Dallas and married Imogene, the love of his life, on January 17, 1947. He went to work as a telephone repairman for Southwestern Bell where he would work for 38 years until his retirement. Ernest and Imogene settled into a home on Courtney Street in Dallas where they would reside for 70 years, raising their three children. He was a life-long Southern Baptist and his family attended Pleasant Grove First Baptist Church for over 60 years where he served for many years as an ordained deacon. He also sang in the choir for all of those years and played the harmonica until very recently. He loved to camp and fish and his family enjoyed many outdoor vacations together with other families and friends throughout the country which continued after he retired. Ernest and Imogene also enjoyed several wonderful trips to England and across Europe with close friends, and reunions with his US Pettit shipmates. He also visited the place where his ship docked during the war 50 years later with his adopted English daughter’s parents with whom he had developed a very close relationship, which they renamed “Ernie’s Dock”. Their home was a frequent gathering spot for family and friends over the years and was a place where all were welcome. Ernest & Imogene were always there to lend a helping hand to their friends and family. Ernest could fix anything and offered that talent to numerous friends, family and church members over the years. He will be greatly missed! In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimers Association or your favorite charity.
