Edwin Hugh Hawes II, an accomplished businessman, committed family man, friend, and loyal patriot, passed away in Dallas on May 27, 2019, his most revered holiday, Memorial Day, surrounded by his family and friends.
Ed was born April 12, 1939, to Col. Edwin Hugh and Louise Criss Hawes at Randolph Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas, and raised in Kansas. He graduated from Emporia High School in Emporia, Kansas, where he was a National Merit Scholar Finalist, and attended the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
Ed’s lifelong affiliation with military services and personnel was a source of great pride for him. He was most proud of his father’s record as an ace fighter pilot in WW ll, credited with downing countless enemy aircraft before giving up his own life in defense of his country, for which he received the Silver Star and Distinguished Service Cross. This was a heritage Ed never forgot, as he always honored our veterans on Memorial Day. The celebration and remembrance of all who had served on behalf of the country he so dearly loved was of utmost importance to Ed.
Ed was an accomplished entrepreneur in every sense of the word. His ability to relate to everyone around him led to a wealth of lifelong friends and admirers. He started his journey in the automobile industry and became the youngest car dealer in America at the age of 24. Through the years, his interest in the oil and gas industry, from the well head to the pipeline, led to even greater success. Ed was involved in one of the largest travel companies in the country, while making other investments in banks, real estate, and other ventures along the way. He enjoyed the outdoors, especially golfing and bird hunting. He always looked forward to the annual gathering of friends at the “Little Siberia” duck club near Stuttgart, Arkansas, and attending the Kentucky Derby. He was proud of his ranching heritage on Matagorda Island.
Despite Ed’s many accomplishments he always considered his friends and family to be his greatest success. Ed’s natural storytelling ability, remembrances, and uncanny ability to remember details, jokes and sports statistics made him the best, and most fun, companion. He loved introducing his friends to each other. Ed was a connector, and no one was better at it than him.
Ed is survived by his loving wife of ten years, Julie Butler Hawes, son Edwin Hughes Hawes III (Trey), daughter Tracy and son-in-law Brad Popoff, grandchildren Preston, William and Reagan Popoff, daughter Rebecca Collins, grandchildren Ellie Underwood, Edwin (Hugh), Charlotte, Virginia (Ginger) and Margaret Hawes, and siblings Jeffrey Hawes, Kit Throgmorton, Thomas Throgmorton, and Judith Adinolfi.
Memorial Services will be held in the Sanctuary at Highland Park United Methodist Church, at the corner of Hillcrest and Mockingbird, at 3:00pm on Tuesday, June 4th, with a reception to follow at Brook Hollow Golf Club in Dallas.
If so desired, contributions to George W. Bush Institute, Military Service Initiative, the Make a Wish Foundation or the American Cancer Society would be most appreciated.
