Edward James Murphy, 94 of Dallas, TX, passed away on Monday, September 9, 2024. He will be remembered as a man of deep faith and a loving husband and father. He was always a leader in his work and personal passions – Sales Executive, Boy Scout Master, Commodore of the Dallas Corinthian Yacht Club, and President of the Dallas Serra Club. Ed was born on October 1, 1929 to Edward and Rose Murphy (Boardman) in Des Moines, IA. He graduated from Dowling Catholic High School in Des Moines, IA in 1947.
Ed married Mabel ‘Margaret’ Chase in Oklahoma City, OK in November 1953. They had six children. The month after the wedding, Ed entered the US Army serving in Tokyo, Japan during the Korean War. He was a Map Compiler aiding in mapping the DMZ along the 38th parallel.
In 1958, Ed graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a Bachelor of Business Degree in Marketing. He began his sales career in Houston, TX at the Foleys Department Store and later became an independent sales representative having two showrooms at the Dallas Apparel Mart. When his wife Margaret died in 1976, Ed became an in-house salesman for Xerox Corporation to be home with his children. He rose to an Executive Sales Manager and always earned the President’s Sales Club recognition.
In 1979, Ed married Patricia Ann Williams in Dallas, TX. Ed loved big families and welcomed Suzy, Patricia’s daughter, into the family. Ed and Patricia enjoyed cooking together, hosting family and friends, and traveling. Ed loved seeing his grandchildren in both California and Texas as well as hearing stories about his great-grandchildren.
Ed is survived by six children: Timothy, Patrick (wife Deborah Starr), Theresa, Katherine, Matthew, and Margaret (husband Brian Haselden), four grandchildren (Sean, Zac, Sara and Sam), six great-grandchildren (Claire, Dylan, Zoey, Grant, Knox and Wade), step-daughter Suzy Collins (husband David), step-grandchildren (Andrew and Cameron), and sister, Eileen Holton. Ed was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Patricia, and his sister, Rosemary.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30am on October 3, 2024, at Christ The King Catholic Church, 8017 Preston Rd, Dallas, TX 75225 with burial to follow at Sparkman/Hillcrest Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to Catholic Charities of Dallas.
