Dorothy was born April 12, 1945, in Valdosta, Georgia to the parentage of Cornelius Brown and Francis Viola Brown. She attended school in Lowndes County, Georgia graduating for Pinevale High School in 1963. Later that same year, she met and married Jerry Mitchell. To this union were born four (4) children: Ingrid Deanean, Shawn Antonio, Kimberly Yvette and Anthony Keith Mitchell. Additionally, she raised her two (2) grandchildren: Cambrie Nichelle Mitchell (Thornton) and Cameron Nicholas Deveraux-Mitchell.
In 1976, she began her career with the Army Air Force Exchange Service (AAFES). In 1980, she relocated her family to Dallas, Texas from Okinawa. She continued her career with AAFES. Additionally, Dorothy acquired various part-time employment positions with the United States Postal Services and at Presbyterian Village in order to provide for her family. In April of 2021, she retired from the Army Air Force Exchange Service.
Dorothy became a member of the General Assembly Church of the Living God PGT in 1993, serving on the Senior Usher Board and sharing the duties as a Youth Director for over 20 years. She enjoyed preparing the youth for their many church performances and for the many victories received from the Annual Youth Conventions. She also served as the Tiny Tots Sunday School teacher for many years. Teaching those little ones gave her such joy.
In May of 2019, Dorothy was awarded her Certificate in Ministry from East Texas Baptist University located in Marshall, Texas. She enjoyed her Saturday trips to the General Assembly Institute in Tyler with classmates and friends now known as "The Van Ministry."
Dorothy was a true believer in God and did not make any moves until she consulted with Him. She taught all of her children to always put God first, to include Him in every decision, and to "Make sure you take the Lord with you." Her favorite scripture is found in Philippians 4:6-7, "Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your request be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard you hearts and minds through Christ Jesus."
She was preceded in death by her parents: Cornelius and Viola Brown, brothers: Obbie Brown, Chester (Sonny) M. Brown, and Salyett L. Brown; sisters: Jetti Jones and Georgia Mae Jenkins; and her son, Shawn Antonio.
She leaves to cherish her memories her children: Ingrid, Kimberly and Anthony; grandchildren: Cambie (Royal), Cameron, Christopher, Kimbrea, An'biya, Elijah, William, Jaidon, Xzavier, and McKinley: great grandchildren: Malik, Maliyah, Patience, Royal (RJ) Jr., Titan, Khalil, and Feline' Bernice; brother, Kenneth E. Brown and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and her COTLG family.
