Doris was born in Synder, Texas, in 1930 to Helen Fort Hilton and Conray Hilton and grew up in Tennessee Colony, Texas. She graduated from Palestine High School in 1947. She attended Nixon Business College and received certifications in various disciplines, including accounting. She worked as a bookkeeper in Dallas at the Cotton Exchange and other businesses.
She met Bert, who was the manager of her apartment complex, and they were married in 1964. Her only child, Ben, was born in 1969. She and her family moved to Houston in 1975. She worked in the office at Vargo’s Restaurant, a Houston institution, for about 20 years. After leaving Vargo’s, she assisted with Bert’s real estate business until she was no longer able to do so.
Doris was a kind and loving mother, spouse, sister, aunt, daughter and friend. She was intensely proud of, and close to, her large, extended family. She loved traveling the world and had visited 49 U.S. States, 10 Canadian Provinces, and traveled throughout Central America, South America, Europe, Russia, Australia and New Zealand.
Doris was preceded in death by her parents, Conray and Helen Hilton and her brothers, Owen and Gary.
She is survived by her husband Bert; her son Ben and wife Rebekah; her grandchildren Ethan and Miles; her sisters Carol, and husband Carvel, Shirley, Sandra, Patricia, and Marilyn, and husband Robin; her brothers Will, and wife Deanne, Dwayne, and wife Toni, and Michael, and wife Gosia; and in-laws, cousins, nieces, and nephews too many to enumerate.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 16, at 3:00 p.m. at Sparkman/Hillcrest Funeral Home.
