Donald grew up in Dallas, Texas, with his parents and only sibling, Dietrich. Don attended John Neely Bryan Elementary School and Oliver Wendell Holmes Middle School in Dallas, TX. During his 1971 school year, Don’s mother Dorothy became sick, and he spent a single school year in Kilgore, Texas, with Dorothy's cousin Earma, her husband, Howard Stephens, Sr., and children Howard Stephens, Jr., Sanford Stephens, and Patryck Stephens.
Don attended and graduated from Franklin D. Roosevelt High School in Dallas, Texas where he was a cross-country track star. Because of how he ran, he was given the nickname Chicken by a Coach. Subsequently amongst the community, his parents became known as Mr. and Mrs. Chicken and his brother, Little Chicken. While in High School, Don worked as a stocker at Kroger Grocery.
Upon graduating from High School in 1981, Don attended Paul Quinn College, Texas’ oldest historical black college in Waco, prior to the school’s relocation to Dallas, Texas in 1990. Don majored in Physical Education. During this time, he lived with his mother's sister Julia and her husband, Agathus Robinson, and their twins Jackie and Jacqueline Robinson. Don remained at Paul Quinn for three years. He was unable to complete his degree due to financial hardship.
Upon his return to Dallas, Don began to work at Shamburger Lumber as a logistical technician. When the company was sold in 2002, he transferred to Architectural Carpentry Materials (ACM). He stayed with this company until the elderly owners sold to a new owner in 2022. The owner continued to pay Don’s his full salary during his cancer fight and through his entirety of his bone marrow transplant period. On behalf of Don and family, we are forever grateful.
Don retired in January 2023. In retirement, Don spent his time visiting and caring for his mother, Dorothy, at "The Traymore at Park Cities" feeding her three meals per day, as she gradually lost her ability to feed herself. This tender devotion of attending to Dorothy's needs was witnessed daily by the Traymore staff, the residents, and their respective family members. In addition, he took computer classes at Dallas College, El Centro Campus.
Don was raised in the Community First Baptist Church under the pastorship of Reverend C.H. Gerald.
Donald loved sports and knew a wealth of stats and facts. As his younger brother Dietrich traveled across America by road, he would check in with Don and informed him of the town or city he was in. Don response would be, “you are in the hometown of this person”, or “who went to college in that city” etc. See
