Donald Ray Balser died suddenly August 20, 2013. He was born on June 20, 1946 in Dallas, Texas. He graduated in 1964 from Hillcrest High School and the University of North Texas in 1968. During Don’s 36 years in the retail advertising department of The Dallas Morning News, he assembled a stellar sales force and developed a total market coverage program that was innovative in the newspaper industry. Upon leaving the News in 2004, Don consulted with newspapers around the country to duplicate this program.
Don lived life to the fullest. He enjoyed playing, refereeing, coaching and watching sports; especially golf, softball, basketball and football. After his retirement, Don moved to Crandall, Texas where he made many lifelong friends and began a second career of service to the community, serving on the Planning & Zoning Commission, the City Council and as Mayor Pro Tem. He supported community programs and was a tireless goodwill ambassador for the City, along with coaching Little League and mentoring in both sports and city government. As a sixth generation Texan, Don loved country-western music, barbeque and spending time at his family farm near Lockhart, Texas.
Don was preceded in death by his parents, Leroy Adolph Balser and Alleen Holloway Balser, and his brother, Gary Leroy Balser. He is survived by his son, Keith Wesley Balser, and his daughter, Deanna Leigh Balser, former wife, Claudia Balser, brother, Alan Wayne Balser and wife Pam, sister Janet Balser, nephews and nieces, Jason Gary Balser and wife Suzie, Clayton Forrest Balser and wife Rem, Laura Balser Allan, Charlotte Balser, Adrienne Nevola and husband Wayne Wilson, Rachel Balser, Hannah Balser, Katelyn Balser, Samantha Balser and Naomi Wilson. Don is also survived by his significant other Barbara Blake and her grandson Markus Blake.
Visitation will be from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Friday, August 23, 2013 at Sparkman/Hillcrest Funeral Home, 7405 W. Northwest Hwy., Dallas, TX. Following a private interment at Hillcrest Memorial Park Cemetery there will be a celebration of Don’s life at First Community Church of Crandall, Texas (1401 Trinity Drive) at 2:00 pm on Saturday, August 24, 2013. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to United Way of Crandall or First Community Church of Crandall (1401 Trinity Drive, Crandall, TX) or the charity of your choice.
