Roosevelt High School, earning a Bachelor of Science from East Texas State University in December of 1973, and a Masters from Amber University in 1995.
Debera was a natural leader. She was the first in her family to graduate from college, a charter member for two chapters in her illustrious sorority, and held numerous leadership roles organizationally and professionally.
Her career began in the medical field, progressed to employee benefits, then to employee relations, and finally to human resources. After over 25 years of service, she retired from the City of Dallas in 2011.
DJ as she was known was a 50 year plus member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, a devoted Sunday School teacher, committed choir member, and active Sisterhood member at Good Street Baptist Church.
She enjoyed solving crossword puzzles, playing solitaire, traveling, reading, was an avid runner (she completed a marathon in 2005), and loved spending time with her beloved family, especially her “grandbabies”. DMa made an effort to attend sporting events, graduations, musicals, concerts, baptisms, and all events that involved Aaron (Handsome Man) and Caleb (Handsome One).
On June 1, 2023, God called her home and Debera began her eternity with her Savior. She leaves to cherish her memory and honor her legacy, her daughter, Jametta Jones Ervin (Mark), and grandsons Aaron and Caleb all of New Albany, Ohio, 3 siblings, James Jr., Bernard, and Dianna nieces, nephews, cousins, Sorors, former colleagues, neighbors, church family, friends and even medical professionals.
