Charles Melvin Work went to be with his Savior Jesus Christ after a brief illness on 1/17/2016 to wait for a reunion with his wife, Yvonne, the love of his life. He was known as a kind man with a generous spirit who was loyal to his church, an avid sports fan who loved playing golf at Tennison Park with his Woodrow buddies, and a dedicated family man with a ready smile for everyone.
Born in Dallas, TX on August 15, 1933 to Charles and Annie Mae Work, who preceded him in death, he attended school in Dallas and graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School where he excelled in baseball and won a scholarship to Texas A & M University. He was known as a pitcher with the fastest arm in the state. He lived up to this reputation and was drafted by the Brooklyn Dodgers where he played several seasons in the minor leagues. After serving his country in the U. S. Army, he worked 37 years for GMAC before retiring.
He and his wife Yvonne met at J L Long Jr. High and they became childhood sweethearts. Their paths parted after high school and each married others and raised families. However, they reunited at the 50th Reunion of Woodrow Wilson in 1979 and rekindled their relationship. They married in 1980 and spent the next 36 years happily sharing their loving family of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Yvonne Erwin Work; children Gary Work, Brian (Sharon) Work, Allison Ingels, Kirk (Olga) Ingels, Earl Ingels; grandchildren, Connor, Donovan Ashlin and Sara Work, Ashley (Travis) Nichols, Lindsay (Josh) Wallick, Oliver, Caleb, Christopher, Samuel and Adam Ingels; 5 great-grandchildren. He leaves his sister, Wanda Shaddox, sisters-in-law Barbara Fix and Geraldine “Tincy” Miller; niece, Judy Kay (Larry) Strawn, nephews, Johnnie Wayne Fincher, Floyd Fincher, Jr., Bill Fincher and a host of other relatives and friends.
Melvin’s life will be celebrated at a Visitation 6-8pm at Sparkman/Hillcrest Funeral home, 7405 West NW HWY, Dallas 75225 on Friday, January 22, 2016, and a chapel service at Northwest Bible Church on Saturday, January 23rd at 1:00 o’clock pm.
