Born Charles Tonnie Samford September 19, 1945, passed away November 4, 2013 at the age of 68 in Dallas, Texas.
Sam was raised in the Pleasant Grove area of Dallas and graduated from W.W. Samuel in 1963. He was proud to be a “Grove Rat” and remained close to his childhood friends. Sam served in the United State Army in Vietnam for 13 months (1968-1969) as a medic in the fourteenth medical detachment. During his service he was awarded the combat medical badge.
After his military service he was employed at the Dallas County Clerk’s Office. He retired after 30 years of service.
After retirement he dedicated himself to his work at VFW 7843. He enjoyed being able to help Veterans and those in the community that were less fortunate. He served as both Vice Commander and Commander at the VFW. During his time as Commander the post achieved All State and All American post twice and was on the way to achieving this recognition again this year. He is survived by wife, Janet Harwell Samford; son & daughter-in-law, Charles and Jessica Samford; daughter & son-in-law Katie and Paul White; grandchildren Peyton, Evan, Parker, Eli; brother and sister-in-law Galen & Judy Samford, and Sister Laura Weaver. Visitation will be Saturday, November 9th at 9:00 a.m. Memorial Service will be at 10:00 a.m. at Grove Hill. The internment will be at 11:30 a.m. at DFW National Cemetery at 2000 Mountain Creek Parkway, Dallas, TX 75211. Following the burial there will be a Celebration of Life at VFW 7843 at 702 Hwy 67, Duncanville, TX 75137.
