Carole Elaine Harwell Baker was born September 13, 1931 in Brownsville, Texas and passed away January 20, 2015 in Richardson, Texas. Though a member of a prominent South Texas family, she relocated with parents Miller and Ellen Harwell to Greenville, Texas. She was the oldest of six siblings and was educated at East Texas State Teacher’s College. It was there that she met husband of sixty-five years, Herbert Roger Baker. The new couple relocated to Dallas, Texas before eventually settling in Garland. They had three children: Cynthia, Judith, and Steven. Elaine worked for Garland ISD for thirty-three years, most as the first female Assistant Athletic Director in the State of Texas. An early champion for women’s athletics, she is an honored member of the Greenville Hall of Fame and the Garland Sports Hall of Fame. A believer in Christ, Elaine was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Ascension in Dallas. She is survived by: husband Herbert Baker; daughter Cynthia Lanning and husband Lynn, daughter Judith Ayers and husband John, son Steven Baker and wife Julie; grandchildren Anderson Crawford, Todd Vice, J.B. Ayers, and Steven Blake Baker; great-grandchildren Tre Crawford, Markie Vice, Joey Vice, Cade Crawford, and Charlotte Ayers; and many loving family and friends. Her life will be celebrated with a memorial service at 2pm on Saturday, January 24, 2015 at Sparkman Hillcrest Chapel in Dallas.
