Rev. Bryant "Buddy" Malcom Black, 82, passed in the presence of family at N. Austin Medical on Tuesday. Bryant, Dallas native and son of Z.E. and Josephine Quillian Black, graduated from Highland Park HS in '48 and SMU in '52. In his teens and 20s he won up to 30 state and regional casting titles, plus two national all-around championships, breaking multiple records. He served at Sand Point Naval Air Station in Seattle and worked as a sales rep for Heddon Lures. After his sister's bout with cancer, he dedicated his life to ministry, attending Columbia Bible College, Covenant Seminary and L'Abri Fellowship in Switzerland. He pastored a church in Auburn, AL and was a field rep for Covenant College. After his marriage to Shirley M. Miller in '69, he relocated to Media, PA, started a family and worked for The Christian Academy, evangelizing and fundraising via his amazing flycasting demos. In '79 he returned to his hometown to serve as Director of Advancement and as a Certified Financial Planner at Dallas Theological Seminary until his retirement in 2010. He was delighted to raise support for training individuals for ministry around the world and continued to fish with his son and share his faith in Christ throughout his courageous struggle with Parkinson's and heart issues. He will be remembered for his passion for stewardship, endless generosity and warm-hearted sense of humor. He is survived by his wife Shirley M. Black of Rockport, TX, son Stephen B. Black of Austin, TX, daughter Stephanie F. Black of Brooklyn, NY and sister Frances J. Black of Decatur, GA. A memorial service will be held at Grace Bible Church, 11306 Inwood Rd at 1pm on Monday the 19th. The family will receive friends from 6-8pm on Sunday the 18th at Sparkman/Hillcrest Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to Dallas Theological Seminary 3909 Swiss Ave Dallas, TX 75204.
