He will always be remembered as a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. His family was his greatest treasure, and he was a friend to all who knew and loved him.
He was born on July 9, 1929 in Hwang Hae province in North Korea, where he spent his childhood. As a teen, he spent 3 years in a labor camp for resisting the communist party. At the tender age of 21, he made the difficult decision to leave his home and fled to the South. He risked his life crossing the heavily armed border and never saw his parents again.
Once in the South, he met his future wife, Kilcha, and joined the South Korean “ROK” army, where he fought in the Korean war against the North’s communist forces. After a distinguished military career, he made the decision to emigrate to the United States in 1974, seeking freedom, educational opportunities for his children and a chance to build a better life. In essence, he came for the “American Dream”.
Through hard work and dedication, he was able to build a successful business that is still thriving. Today, his legacy is carried on by his children.
Bong Ki is survived by his wife Kilcha, three children, Charlie, Aeran and Mike, nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
The Celebration of Life service will be held at 10:00 AM on August 9, 2023 at Sparkman/Hillcrest Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Hillcrest Memorial Park.
