On Saturday, January 2, 2021, Betty Jo York, loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and great great grandmother passed away at the age of 92 in Hurst, Texas. She was born on September 16, 1928, in Bastrop, Texas, to her parents, the late Creed and Grace Taylor. Betty was happily married to the love of her life, the late Melvin A. York, for 70 years.
Betty had a fulfilling life as a wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, great great grandmother, aunt, sister, and friend. She served as a switchboard operator at Western Union in the 1950s and would often tell stories of her many experiences: including vivid details of surviving the great Dallas Tornado of 1957. She went on to later work at the Army and Air Force Exchange Service in Dallas, Texas for more than 20 years before retiring with her husband, Mel, to their home at Cedar Creek Lake in Gun Barrel City, Texas. She loved living the lake life and going fishing, which was one of her many passions. She was also a devout Christian woman who loved her savior, Jesus Christ.
Known as “Mom” or “Granny”, Betty was wonderfully devoted to her six children, nine grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren, and eight great great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Melvin A. York; sons, Robert York and Richard L. York; daughter, Martha A. Hilsabeck; grandson, Brandon York; granddaughter, Shannon; and eight of her nine siblings.
She is survived by her daughter, Marjorie Yeager; and sons Don York (Lisa), and Dana York; nine grandchildren: Bart Solomon (Deanna), Kimberly Johnson (Chris), Shelly Mitchell (Ray), Duke York, Pete York, Teresa Lausier (Fred), Richard Robertson, Stephanie Adams (Chad), and Dustin York); 13 great grandchildren; eight great great grandchildren; and sister Mary Lou.
Betty was a cherished Aunt to numerous nieces and nephews; and was Granny to countless others that she nurtured during her lifetime. She was a true example of selflessness to everyone that had the privilege of knowing her, and she leaves behind many other extended family members and friends who will sadly miss her.
Funeral service will be held at 12 p.m. Wednesday, January 20, 2021, at Grove Hill Funeral Home. Burial will follow at 2:15 p.m. at the Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery in Grand Prairie, Texas where she will be laid to rest with her husband, Mel.
Visitation is from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Monday, January 20, 2021 at the funeral home.
