Barry was born in Gonzales, Texas, on August 10, 1932. He was the youngest child of four children and the only son born to Matilda Lippman and Abe Cohen. His other siblings, besides Sandy, were Carol Brin and Maureen Greenberg. Though he left Gonzales when he was young, he always viewed Gonzales as his home town. His family moved to San Antonio, Houston and Dallas, where he attended Highland Park High School. He then went on to study civil engineering at the University of Texas. During the summer, he would hitchhike to Alaska to work and send money home. At UT, he eventually became President of the Jewish fraternity, Alpha Epsilon Pi. After college, he enrolled in the US Army Corps of Engineers and was based in Turkey. Those were some of the most memorable years of his life.
He married Sandra Ann Rabinowitz in 1961 and they had four children - Collin, Shaun, Shana and Josh. Barry had a number of passions: travelling, the Dallas Cowboys and any Dallas sports team, the University of Texas, reading, opera, storytelling - especially about British spies - family, a great steak, a spectacular bourbon or scotch and a good cigar. He also was interested in Biblical archeology, Meerschaum pipes, Stonehenge and King Arthur and the Round Table.
He was a very successful project manager in construction, working all over the United States, until he settled near Collin in the last decade of his life. He volunteered for the San Jose Opera for years after he retired. Over the last year, he attended daily online classes in history and literature.
Most of all, Barry will be remembered for his decency and kindness. He was a very good man who cared tremendously for his children and grandchildren. He was always there for them, to listen and to help if he could. He was devoted to their happiness and wellbeing.
