Those that knew and loved Barbara affectionately called her Myme. She was a lively spirit that loved to talk and never met a stranger. Her home was always open to anyone that wanted to stop by during the holidays and beyond. She often maintained relationships with her children’s friends as they would often call upon her for wisdom and friendly conversation. She was an overall welcoming soul. She was energized by music and any opportunity to socialize. She cared deeply for her family and found great fulfillment in family gatherings.
Barbara’s love for family is what kept her strong and fortified. As a child, she longed for a large extended family of aunts, uncles, cousins, etc. And she found great delight in the family she created which provided a lifetime of joy and memories for her.
Barbara moved from Amarillo, Texas to Oklahoma City in 1977 to pursue a better life for herself and for her children. She possessed an incredible work ethic and lead by example. Her sacrifice to her children was unparalleled which has become part of her beautiful legacy.
Barbara worked in many different professions as a young women and held a cosmetology license for over 40 years. She was a member of the NAACP and frequently donated to the UNCF. She relocated from Oklahoma City to Dallas, Texas in 2004 to be closer to her adult children and grandchildren.
The best gifts we’ve received as a family during this difficult loss are the stories that have been shared by those who she touched in one form or another. For some, she provided care and refuge; for some, she gave love and support; for some, she offered encouragement to press forward; and for others, it might have been a long conversation full of laughter. As a family, we are grateful to know that Barbara Ann Harvey’s life immensely mattered. We get to now stand on her shoulders as we strive to make such a difference in the lives of others.
