He was born in Louisville, Kentucky to Lenthus T and Sallie Ruth Patton. As a teenager he joined the Trinity Methodist Church. He helped his parents raise funds for their church.
Arthur was a serviceman, entrepreneur and volunteer. He graduated from the Tuskegee Institute as Phi Beta Kappa and was an ROTC cadet and a member of the Omega Phi Psi fraternity. Arthur served his country for 20 years in the United States Air Force where he achieved the rank of Major. He spent one year of his service in Vietnam where he had several “close calls.” They were so severe that he refused to talk about them to anyone throughout his life. For his service in Vietnam, he was awarded the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart medals. He also received many meritorious awards during his years in service. Arthur was stationed in France and multiple locations in the US during his long and distinguished military career.
After retirement from the Air Force, Arthur was an established franchisee with McDonald’s for several years. Later he was an active investor and entrepreneur in multiple ventures.
Arthur was an accomplished athlete. He was a gymnast in college. He won several championships in handball and racquetball while serving in the military. He loved long distance running for much of his life and in later years walked and worked out nearly every day.
Arthur has always been involved in the community. While serving in France, he was active in the community as a 33rd Degree Mason. His duty and volunteer engagement with local neighborhoods continued at each of his bases in the US and through his entrepreneurship. After retirement from the restaurant business, he became a very active volunteer with the YMCA of Oak Cliff and regularly led senior outings. He was also active in the leadership of the local AARP.
While Arthur kept a busy business and volunteer schedule, he also considered himself to be a family man. Arthur is survived by his wife Blanche, son Jeff, sister Alice Stewart of Louisville, KY, and several nieces and nephews. He was a kind, loving and giving man, and will be greatly missed.
