Although it took place in 1937, the following memory is as clear and as dear to me as if it happened last week. 
Alice, with her long diaphanous gown, which even in our seven-year-old minds seemed so inappropriate for a housemaid, had collected Stanley and me in the kitchen of our grocery store-house at 2649 North 31st Street, Philadelphia, to tell us some important family news. We were both in awe of Alice. She was rather tall, blond, and for all the world seemed like a fairy princess about to go to a royal ball, not a woman employed to do common housework.  
Cousin Stanley and I listened quietly to the big news. We knew it was something of great significance that Alice was about to reveal. 
And then it came: ‘Aunt Freda, Uncle Ellis’ devoted wife, has purchased a baby boy. And they’re in the process of bringing the little one home. He was born yesterday, on the 24th of February, and they named him Allan.’
Stanley and I were as overwhelmed, amazed, and pleased as peach pie to have a new cousin. The two of us thought of him as some kind of a living toy we could play with, and weren’t sure exactly when we’d see him. We just knew it was exciting news that Aunt Freda had purchased a tiny boy, and was about to bring him home.

Allan’s Dad, who was my mother Edith’s oldest brother, expressed regrets that in his younger years he had a feeling he should become a doctor, but never followed it up. His son Allan became that doctor that Ellis wished he could have been. Allan went on to serve many who needed his hands of healing. Although my calling was to become a writer, poet, and performer, and the arts were my life’s passion, I learned of Allan’s good works and progress through our mutual cousin Stanley and Allan’s mother Freda. I met Allan occasionally at family get-togethers, and will always remember him with respect and appreciation.



We met in 1965 when we were young. At the start of our professional careers.
Looking forward to success with great optimism and few fears.
For a short time we separated and went our separate ways.
Then in 1974, Allan offered me a job that lasted 14,600 days.
Over that 40 year span we had no discord. Working together as a team had its own reward.
Allan married the beautiful Linda; it gave me delight. He scientific, she creative, they fit just right.
We missed him when he he retired,  moved far away. Remembering his humor, the pithy words he'd say.
We will miss him forever since Allan took his last breath.
Leaving behind many loved ones who lost him to death.
