Alice Hinkle Swanberg passed away quietly on Sunday, May 17th. She was born on February 20th, 1923 in Middletown, OH, to Claire William Hinkle and Gwendolyn Merritt Hinkle. She attended local schools and Miami University in Oxford, OH, where she studied English, History and Journalism. She was a member of the Phi Beta Kappa Society. She married Arthur Daniel Swanberg, in 1946 and settled in Fort Worth, TX, when he was discharged from service in 1948. She was a member of All Saints Episcopal Church where she served as a Sunday school teacher and administrative assistant to the rector. She and her family moved to Dallas, TX, in 1965. The family joined St. John’s Episcopal Church. She was president of the St. John’s Episcopal School Board of Trustees from 1990 to 1992. Under her direction and in concert with then-Head of School Grace Cook, the school grew from a small elementary school to include almost 400 students in pre-k through grade eight. In addition, she oversaw a capital campaign that raised funds for the middle school wing that housed the new students. Her support of the school was steadfast even beyond her years of leadership. The administrative conference room still bears her name. She is survived by her son Geoffrey and daughter-in-law Adrienne, her grandchildren, Allison Melissa and Audra Michelle. She was admired for her wit, friendliness, integrity and concern for others; she will be missed. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, June 16th at 10:00 AM, at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 848 Harter Road, Dallas, TX 75218. With Committal at St. John’s Episcopal Church Columbarium following the service.
